Contenido Designers' Guide to Eurocode 8: Design of Bridges for Earthquake resistance

This series of Designers’ Guides to the Eurocodes provides comprehensive guidance in the form of design aids, indications for the most convenient design procedures and worked examples. The books also include background information to aid the designer in understanding the reasoning behind and the objectives of the codes. All of the individual guides work in conjunction with the Designers’ Guide to Eurocode: Basis of Structural Design. EN 1990.

Designers’ Guide to Eurocode 8: Design of bridges for earthquake resistance is the first guide to focus specifically on EN 1998-2 (Eurocode 8. Part 2 Bridges), the design standard for use in the seismic design of bridges in which horizontal seismic actions are mainly resisted through bending of the piers or at the abutments, however it can also be applied to the seismic design of cable-stayed and arched bridges. As bridge engineering becomes increasingly complex, with the demands of rapid expansion of transportation networks, new priorities in land use and increased awareness of environmental protection requirements, the use of Eurocode 8, covering all aspects of seismic design, is important not only for public safety in seismic regions but also for competitiveness of the consultancy and engineering services sector in Europe and beyond.

This Designers’ Guide aspires to help the European community become familiar with the code, get the most out of it and apply it in a cost-effective way.

This guide is essential reading for
- civil and structural engineers
- code-drafting committees
- clients
- structural-design students
- public authorities

in fact, everyone who will be affected by the Eurocodes.
